WASHINGTON, DC — David Sauer, president of Consumers United for Rail Equity (CURE) issued the following statement on today’s vote by the U.S. Senate to confirm Daniel R. Elliott III to a second term on the Surface Transportation Board (STB):
“While chairman of the STB, Mr. Elliott earned the respect and support of both shippers and railroads for his willingness to listen to all sides of an issue and his extensive outreach. During his May 6 confirmation hearing, Mr. Elliott’s responses to various questions raised by the Committee Members echoed frustrations long shared by shippers including that the current rate case process was unfair.
CURE congratulates Mr. Elliott on his confirmation to a second term to the STB and looks forward to working with both him and Acting Chair Deb Miller and Vice Chair Ann Begeman.
CURE also appreciates the continued support of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee and the leadership of Chairman John Thune (R-SD) and Ranking Member Bill Nelson (D-FL) on issues of concern to rail shippers.”
The STB has been operating with only two members since Mr. Elliott’s previous term on the STB, including his holdover period, expired December 31, 2014. President Obama nominated Mr. Elliott for a second term on January 13.
